The Green {Family} Chex Mix

The Holidays…. from Thanksgiving to New Years…. bring so much nostalgia with them.  From my very earliest memories, I remember once the first snow started falling in Montana each winter it also brought the parade of homemade holiday treats.  From cutout frosted cookies, to fudge, tea cookies, to chocolate covered cherry balls {I know!}, date bars, cheese balls, to finally the chex mix.  For me, the chex mix tastes like memories – savory ones. For the many others that have been gifted this over the years it has been accused of causing extreme, unwavering addiction.  I would watch my dad slow roast batches of this in the oven just waiting for the chance of a bite.  I have no idea of the origin of the recipe, just that it always has been.  And while it is soaked in lovely memories …. I , we, keep it alive because it is just that good.

The Green {Family} Chex Mix

It’s in the simplicity of the melted butter, seasoned salt & worchestire that coat each piece.  While it slow roasts the flavors marry into a savory, rich blend of just right. When “chex mix season” arrives I proceed to make 1-3 batches a week depending on what’s going on.  They are given out here and there as people come to mind i’d like to give a little gift to – while in the midst of that snacking myself.  Then the recipe is packed away in February until next “season” comes around.  My husband is convinced I have an addiction …. I say it’s a contained obsession. The New Year is around the corner and this will go great at your party.  Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you!

Ingredients
  1. 2 sticks unsalted butter
  2. 3 tsp. seasoned salt
  3. 3 T. worchestire sauce
  4. 1 1/2 cups mixed nuts
  5. 6 cups rice chex cereal
  6. 6 cups corn chex cereal
  7. 1 cup pretzels (I used gluten free)
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 250. Put sticks of butter into roasting pan, then put into heated oven to melt (about 10 min.). When butter is melted, add seasoned salt and worchestire sauce, stirring to combine. Then add nuts, cereal, and pretzels. You can add each on top of each other, then stir all together to combine with the butter sauce. Place in oven for 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes.
Notes
  1. I only used rice & corn chex as I need it to be gluten free. Feel free to also add wheat chex - use a total of 12 cups cereal and it will work fine.
